Rage Mini-Review

Okay, I feel like I need to put my 2-cents in here.  I have been playing the crap out of Rage and I feel it is getting a slightly bad rap.  Yes its like Fallout, Yes its like Borderlands, and I am perfectly okay with that.  Who ever said every FPS needs to reinvent the wheel, if it works and its fun why not use it?

To everyone saying that it lacks RPG elements.  Who said it was an RPG? Seriously this is id here, not Square.  Its an adventure FPS.  Think Doom or Quake on a, slightly, less linear path that lets you pick from multiple quests at any given time.

To everyone saying that the textures/graphs are sub-par.  Do any of you understand what it takes to make a game?  Its impressive as hell it looks as good as it does.  Yes the textures are a bit low-res but take a look at the variety of locals and textures.  I do not think I have seen much in repeating textures, unless there is a consistent design in a specific area. The texture folder is 11.4 GB on the PC version.... that is twice as big as most AAA titles in their entirety.  The fact that they are lower res than other games, goes to show you how many different textures they put into the game.  Also I know some graphic artists... and 3d textures are probably one the hardest thing to do in game development.

Okay, now for some of my thoughts on the actual game.  It is fun, pure and simple.  I have not sat down to play a game for this length of time in a while.  I have played the game for over 7 hours (probably a little less due to pausing and walking out of the room for a bit at times, but still) and that has been within a day.  The last time I did this was when Portal 2 came out and I finished that in 5 hours.  Either way what I am trying to say here is the chief measure of a game should be how fun it is, not the graphics, not the AI, not the story.  Yes all of those things go into making the game good but as long as you are having fun, who the hell cares about anything else.

The only problem I have with the game is the PC controls.  I actually took out my Xbox 360 controller and hooked it up to my computer to play Rage.  That said I highly recommend doing just that.  If you have a computer more powerful and either console, it is totally worth it.  There is far, FAR less texture popping and the graphics are just, in general, better.  But the game was made for console, and keyboard and mouse control is, unfortunately, bearable at best.

So far I recommend at least renting the game, it is worth playing.  For full disclosure I bought the game on Steam at full MSRP at $59.99.  I will give a more through review of Rage once I have finished it.

I think I might start doing this more often, I am getting sick and tired of game's getting great or horrible reviews for the dumbest things or because the reviewer does not like a specific genre of games.  I would love to start reviewing games from the perspective of 1. is it fun? 2. if you like this kind of game, will you enjoy this one?
